– Honestly, this was one of the best tournament games I’ve seen all year, probably the best. Good team play, big performances from big players, not too many turnovers or fouls, just a good game between two good teams. Further reinforced the idea that experience wins in tight games in the NCAA tournament.

– Wilt Chamberlain played for Kansas. So did JoJo White and Paul Pierce and Danny Manning. But today, inside the Metrodome in Minneapolis, Cole Aldrich did something that no Kansas basketball player has ever done. Aldrich, a native of suburban Minneapolis, had the first triple-double in history, finishing with 13 points, 20 rebounds and 10 blocks in Kansas’ 60-43 victory over Dayton. In the final minute, Aldrich, gassed and exhausted, finally took his seat on the bench as the Rock Chalk chant echoed throughout the Metrodome. It’s hard to dissect Aldrich’s performance, it may be better just to marvel at the numbers – but we’ll try anyway.

– Pay no attention to the final margin. It wasn’t nearly that close. The score was tied at 30 before Michigan State closed the first with 11 straight points, opened the second half with 10 straight points and that was about that. Overall, Tom Izzo was pretty pleased, and he had every right to be.

– Tyrese Rice is one of the top scorers in the ACC, but he’s only 6 feet 1. It seemed might have trouble against USC’s 6-5 guards, Daniel Hackett and Dwight Lewis — and for once, the pregame analysis proved correct. Rice couldn’t find any room all game, finishing with nine points on 4-of-11 shooting. Does the ACC have no big guards?
At the Arena: Huggy Bear bares his claws
Will Hanlon of the Flyer News reports from Minneapolis that Bob Huggins is not happy:
“They got better players than us,” West Virginia’s coach yelled in the first half against Dayton. “They have so many better players. They drive and make fucking layups and we can’t even make a pass!”

– Dayton gave us another mini-upset that really wasn’t. The 6-11 game is the new 7-10 game. Nowadays, in the age of early entries and one-and-done players, and with the amount of parity in college basketball, there is rarely any difference in talent level between the 6th and 11th seeds. Yes, West Virginia had players with more pro potential, but the overall difference in the team was negligible. Let’s just put it this way. If an 11-seed wins, you probably shouldn’t call it an upset.

– Kansas’ Sherron Collins and North Dakota State’s Ben Woodside engaged in an old-fashioned saloon-style shootout. Woodside, a 5-foot-11 senior point guard, finished with 37 points, including an array of runners, pull-ups and threes. Collins, a stocky junior point guard, matched him shot for shot, finishing with 32 points and eight assists.
