– Connecticut led the entire game, but the Boilermakers did a good job dragging them down to their level with indefatigable defense and were right in the game for 30-plus minutes before the Huskies pulled away. Unable to solve Hasheem Thabeet’s inside defense, Purdue just couldn’t break through after cutting the margin to three several times.

Diary of a bench player
By Andrew Greif
PORTLAND, Ore. — When Purdue plays top-seeded Connecticut in Glendale, Ariz., next week in the Sweet Sixteen, Ryne Smith will be on the bench.
Not that he wouldn’t be. He’s been there all season.
His freshman season, out of Whitmer High in Toledo, Ohio, hasn’t been along the same lines of a Derrick Rose or even of Purdue teammate Robbie Hummel, but say this for Smith: His seat is much better than last year’s.
“Last year I was sitting at home watching it with my dad on the couch,” Smith said. “Now I’m sitting on the bench front row.”

– Purdue exploded early and staved off collapse to win a very solid, suspenseful college basketball game and break through to the Sweet Sixteen after going out in the second round the past two years. JaJuan Johnson did what Jarvis Varnado could not, giving the Boilers a tall, skilled counterpart to Jon Brockman’s bruising inside for the Huskies. He and his teammates had just enough to hold on after Isaiah Thomas figured out how to get into lane at will.

– This game nearly made me rip my face off in exasperation. Not so much because there weren’t good or exciting plays, but because Purdue was playing just well enough to keep the Panthers at arm’s length. It wasn’t a great performance and it wasn’t (really) a close game, despite some mild last-minute drama. Just a plodding margin of 8-10 points the whole way, it seemed. Like the Boilermakers, I was just trying to survive and advance.
